Piano And Keyboard

The piano is a stringed instrument played by pressing the piano keys, which cause hammers to strike the strings. It's one of the most versatile instruments, used for solos, ensembles, accompaniment and also composing music. The instrument was made famous in its early years by many classical composers, including Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.

Prior to the creation of the Piano we had the clavichord and the harpsichord. Both these instruments produced sound from quills plucking strings. However, harpsichord lacked volume control, and while the clavichord allowed for this control, it lacked the same quality of sound that the harpsichord produced. Cristofori was a harpsichord maker in Italy and he wanted to create an instrument that combined the best qualities of both the harpsichord and clavichord. His finished product was the first pianoforte by the 1700’s. From this Silbermann added the damper pedal, which removes all of the dampers from the strings and allows them to freely vibrate. A modernized version of this pedal is still a major component of today's pedals. During the late 18th century, Viennese makers redesigned the piano to have two strings per hammer, leather coverings on the hammers and a wood frame. It was this style of pianoforte that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart preferred to play and compose with. Then the pianoforte underwent a series of changes. The strings were replaced with high-quality steel and iron replaced the wood frames and the note range increased from five octaves to seven and a quarter. To separate the design differences all pianofortes designed after the 18th century were called the "piano."
